Women Governed From Within: Cultivating a Spiritually Minded Life
Feb 23, 2026
Romans 8:6 — “For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.”
The presence of God is not something we invite as though He were distant.
We acknowledge that He already dwells within us.
Scripture tells us clearly:
“Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?” (1 Corinthians 3:16)
“The Spirit of God dwells in you.” (Romans 8:9)
The Holy Spirit is not visiting.
He is indwelling.
And yet, there are moments where we must become still enough to recognise Him — to quiet our reactions, our anxieties, our mental noise — and ask:
“Holy Spirit, what are You saying to me right now?”
This week, we reflected on Romans 8:6 and what it truly means to live governed from within.
Carnally Minded vs Spiritually Minded
Romans 8:5–6 draws a sharp but necessary contrast:
-
To be carnally minded is death.
-
To be spiritually minded is life and peace.
Carnal thinking is not always obvious rebellion.
Often, it is subtle.
It is when our decisions are governed by:
-
Old wounds
-
Emotional reactions
-
Pride or control
-
Fear of outcomes
-
Resentment
-
Trauma-based responses
Carnal thinking reacts to what it sees.
Spiritual thinking pauses.
Spiritual thinking acknowledges the indwelling Spirit and says:
“Before I respond, before I assume, before I defend —
Spirit of God, what is the truth here?”
To be spiritually minded is not passivity.
It is awareness.
Stillness Is Not Weakness
There are seasons where God does not require noise, striving or performance.
He requires stillness.
Psalm 46:10 reminds us:
“Be still, and know that I am God.”
Stillness is the posture that allows the indwelling Spirit to speak.
When we refuse stillness, we default to flesh.
When we choose stillness, we allow revelation.
And deliverance often begins there.
Deliverance is not always dramatic.
Sometimes it looks like awareness.
Sometimes it looks like conviction.
Sometimes it looks like recognising that your reaction was flesh-led, not Spirit-led.
Life and peace follow when we allow correction.
Governed From Within
The Spirit within you influences your thoughts, your perception, your decisions.
But He does not override you.
He whispers.
He nudges.
He reveals.
Spiritual maturity is learning to discern:
-
Is this my emotion speaking?
-
Is this my history speaking?
-
Or is this the Spirit of God leading me?
When we acknowledge His indwelling presence, our entire posture shifts.
We stop reacting instantly.
We stop assuming.
We stop projecting.
We begin responding from revelation.
And that is where peace enters.
Rebuilding Through the Spirit
A testimony was shared this week that highlighted how the Spirit reveals hidden areas of the heart — not to shame, but to restore.
When the Spirit exposes something within us, it is not condemnation.
It is an invitation to rebuild.
Romans 8 is not simply about behaviour modification.
It is about transformation of the mind.
To be spiritually minded means:
-
Allowing the Spirit to reshape thought patterns
-
Letting go of resentment
-
Surrendering control
-
Releasing outcomes
-
Trusting God with what we cannot fix
It is recognising that the indwelling Spirit is not passive — He is actively forming Christ within us.

What Walking According to the Spirit Looks Like
Walking according to the Spirit may look like:
-
Pausing before speaking.
-
Repenting when convicted.
-
Releasing someone you have tried to control.
-
Refusing to rehearse offence.
-
Choosing peace over being right.
-
Sitting in God’s presence without agenda.
It is quiet strength.
It is internal governance.
It is surrender.
And it produces life.
For The Woman Reading This
If you have felt restless, reactive or internally unsettled, this is your reminder:
The Spirit of God dwells within you.
You do not need to summon Him.
You need to acknowledge Him.
Become still.
Listen.
Let Him speak before you move.
To be spiritually minded is life and peace.
And peace is not external — it is cultivated from within.
