The Truth That Sets You Free: Why We Must Stop Running and Start Abiding
May 19, 2025
We don’t always realise we’re doing it—but many of us are running from the truth.
Not because we hate truth, but because truth can feel painful, confronting, and inconvenient. Yet, truth is the doorway to what we’re all longing for: freedom.
Real, lasting, soul-deep freedom.
At Alethea, this principle is core to everything we do. Our very name, Alethea, means truth—and we believe that truth, revealed by the Spirit of God, is what brings healing and transformation.
Why Truth Is Hard (But Necessary)
The truth often exposes what we’ve hidden. It confronts the masks, the coping mechanisms, and the false identities we've built to survive pain. But here’s what we’ve learned:
God cannot heal what we won’t reveal.
And what we won’t bring to the light, the enemy will keep bound in darkness.
The Freedom is in the Abiding
Many of us are familiar with Jesus’ famous words in John 8:32:
“Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
But what’s often missed is the verse before that—John 8:31:
“If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed.”
The freedom Jesus speaks of isn’t a one-time feeling—it’s a lifestyle of abiding.
The word "abide" in Greek (μένω / menō) means:
To remain, to dwell, to endure, to continue.
In other words, we are called to live in His Word—not just visit it in moments of crisis. We must wrestle with truth, stay in it, and allow it to challenge us daily.
What the Story of the Adulterous Woman Teaches Us
Right before Jesus declared that “the truth will set you free,” He had just defended a woman caught in adultery. The Pharisees brought her out in shame, hoping to trap Jesus. But instead of condemning her, He revealed truth in love:
“Neither do I condemn you. Go and sin no more.” (John 8:11)
Then He said something powerful:
“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12)
Light—truth—exposes sin but doesn’t leave us there. It calls us higher. It leads us out of hiding and into healing.
Your Invitation Today
Jesus wasn’t just speaking to the woman. He was speaking to the crowd—to those just beginning to believe, those stepping into revelation, and those like us: women hungry for freedom, healing, and purpose.
So today, I ask you to pray with me:
“Jesus, I accept the freedom I have found in You.
I pray for deeper understanding of Your truth.
Help me to abide—not just visit—Your Word.
Reveal the hidden things and heal me in Your light.”
